Whether you Love'em or Hate'em we have to reduce the numbers of Homeless Cats! What is in it for YOU?
A Trap Neuter Return program will have the following results:
1) overall population reduction (existing healthy cats keep "new" cats from entering the territory; existing cat numbers decrease due to "natural causes")
2) no more kittens
3) less noise from mating and fighting
4) less smell (neutered male cat urine odour is reduced)
5) existing cats will be vaccinated against rabies, and provide rodent control
A TNR Program is the best option we have at this time that is safe for both cats and humans.
To trap a cat you do need to provide food in the trap. Just a tablespoon of canned salmon or other strong smelling meat works well.
It works best if you can feed the cat at a certain location and time for a few days, when you usually see the cat, before you trap. (Only leave the food out for 20 to 30 min. The cats will "get the memo" that this is their time and place to feed, once a day.) That will allow you to know the right place and time to set the trap, and so that the cat is not as afraid of people so that it may be able to be socialized and hopefully find a forever home.
Do not feed the cat after it is dark to ensure that all of the food (about 1 cup of dry food) is eaten by the cat and not left to attract other animals who come out at night.
Please read below for information before you attempt to trap a cat.
Feral cats do survive on our garbage, mice, birds, etc. because they are starving. Even some cats who are well fed and cared for, when allowed to roam outside will hunt mice, birds, etc.. However, this diet does not provide them with enough nutrients to remain healthy. As a result, Feral Cats have a much shorter live span.
Leaving the Feral Cats to fend for themselves results in two problems:
1) The Feral Cats live very hard, undeserving lives.
2) The Feral Cats are reproducing. The Females may have 1 to 3 litters a year, and the male cats produce many litters a year.
So....the people who feed the cats do not put out food hoping to attract cats. They put out food because a cat is in their yard, hungry, getting into their garbage, etc.
What Happens in our Trap Neuter Return Program:
1. Contact us.
2. Appointment is made for the surgery and payment is arranged.
Appointments are necessary before you trap the cat because surgery time has to be scheduled!
3. We provide you with a trap and show you how it works if you do not have one.
***Always watch a set trap. Successful trapping of a Feral Cat will usually occur within about 10 minutes. The trapped cat should then be covered with a sheet/blanket right away to keep the cat calm.
4. We coordinate transportation for the cat to and from the clinic, if you can not provide it.
5. We coordinate the release of the cat, and provide you with food and feeding instructions.
Remember: 1 healthy cat in your yard keeping other cats out is much better than 9 to 18 unhealthy cats within 15 months.
